Matt Albright & Bill Casper
4. Danger Ahead
Matt Albright & Bill Casper

Music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne
EMI April Music Inc.

Matt Albright:  Guitar, bass, drums, and background vocals on the right side, except for during the chorus
Bill Casper:  Lead vocals and all other background vocals

Matt lives in Franklin, Wisconsin, and Bill lives in West Allis, Wisconsin, USA.  Matt is a member of the Showdown list and is a huge ELO and Jeff Lynne fan.  Bill is a big fan as well, though the first time he heard “Danger Ahead” was less than four weeks before his vocals were recorded.  Bill appears on this track because he thought it would be exciting to be a part of this, and Matt was overjoyed to not have to sing this himself because he didn’t want to ruin a perfectly good instrumental recording with his singing.  Using a Roland VS-880 digital recorder and a Pioneer PDR-509 audio CD recorder, instruments were recorded in Matt’s bedroom and basement; vocals were recorded in Bill’s basement.”

Andy Brown
6. Daybreaker
Andy Brown

Music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne
EMI Blackwood Music Inc.

I chose this track mainly because of Richards playing.  (I'm a guitarist first and a struggling keyboard player second).

I love the whole mood and drama of the original. I have to admit that my version is almost completely sequenced, except the guitar bits. This is a luxury that Jeff didn't have in those early days. They nailed it live in the studio. I also chose it because it showcases Jeff’s ability make something sound huge (even before superstardom afforded him real orchestras and choirs). Oh... And one more reason for choosing this track.... I can't sing to save my life.

Bagweeds  7. Oh No Not Susan
Bagweeds

Music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne
Anne-Rachel Music/EMI Blackwood Music Inc.
Recorded by Christian Fischer and Matthias Heimann at SC-Gold Studios, Solingen, Germany.
Richard's keyboards recorded by Richard at home, The Hague, The Netherlands.

Christian Fischer: programming, vocoder, mars radio
Richard Flapper: keyboards
Matthias Heimann: vocals, guitars, bass and additional keyboard

THE BAGWEEDS are mostly Matt, sometimes Flab and sometimes they're not even themselves. Says Matt: "My love for Jeff Lynne goes all the way back to the 70s when I first listened to 'Mr. Blue Sky' coming out of my brother's Stereo. I was 5 years old at that time." THE BAGWEEDS try to achieve the typical Jeff Lynne trademark sound on most of their recordings: beautiful melodies, lush arrangements and a distinctive sense for catchy pop melodies.

Matthew writes and produces tunes from his studio by the sea on the East coast of England. His own album 'Bittersweet' was released in 2006. He also writes for theatre.  Matt is currently recording a brand new CD of songs for release in 2011.

featuring Shaz Pratt & Conrad Shields

Music and lyrics by Jeff Lynne
EMI April Music inc.

Backmasking on "From The End of The World" by Shaz Pratt and the late Conrad Shields.  Recorded in 1997, on Conrad's Computer, in his home in Exeter, Devon, England.  Shaz says ‘Conrad and I just did this for fun one day. I thought it sounded so good that I made a recording of it.  Glad I did now, cause you can now all get to hear how mad Conrad and I were :-)’

Dedicated to my dear friend Conrad Shields. 1967-2001.  –Shaz Pratt

Electric Light Orchestra has always been a mystery to me.  I didn’t become a die-hard fan until their Time album hit the airwaves.  This album struck a chord deep within me and has influenced my compositions ever since. I produce music projects from home and most recently played bass with Frootie Flavors. Thank you Marsea, for your support.

Locations:
Jamie Amos – Santa Cruz, CA.
Shaz Pratt & Conrad Shields – Devon, UK.

Casey McCammon
11. Whisper in the Night*
Casey McCammon

Music and lyrics by Roy Wood
Anne-Rachel Music/EMI Blackwood Music Inc.

My name is Casey McCammon and I live in Northern Utah where I work as a programmer analyst. I first heard ELO when I was a high school junior in Star Valley, Wyoming. I had borrowed the Afterglow collection through a friend and was blown away by this new (to me) sound. Since the CDs I first heard were a collection of ELO's works from 1970 to 1986, I was able to hear the wide spectrum of musical styles that were created by Jeff Lynne over that time span. From the grinding cellos to the electronic bleeps I loved it all. I have enjoyed playing and creating music my whole life. I have enjoyed writing and recording my own songs as well as my attempts to mould ELO songs from my own perspective, principally with the violin, and later self-taught on piano and guitar. My favorite cover I've recorded is the Roy Wood song "Whisper in the Night". His contribution to the first ELO album was excellent and groundbreaking in my opinion, so it's nice to have him represented on an ELO covers collection. I have always loved the tune and its hymnal sound. It has a very simplistic spiritual quality to it and I tried to reflect that in my piano-focused version.
